Lesley and I first met in 2003 when I interviewed Saint Francis students for an internship at Digital Solutions. We got to hire two interns, and I requested “the older of the 2 interns” which just happened to be Lesley...best choice I've ever made. Things were actually quite innocent while we worked together. Over the summer Lesley was living at home in Pittsburgh and we kept in touch mostly by talking online. She offered to meet me in the Southside while I was in Pittsburgh on business. This was the first time we hung out outside of work. There was something there, but since Lesley still had a boyfriend (boo), nothing romantic came of it, but a friendship was born. Over the next couple months Lesley and I continued to talk, mostly online, on a pretty consistent basis. Later in the summer I was complaining to Lesley about having to go to a wedding by myself (my passive-aggressive way of asking her to go). Finally she agreed to go with me...and we had a great time. We continued to talk and hang out occasionally the rest of the summer,(Lesley broke up with her
boyfriend) and when she came back to Saint Francis for the fall we started dating- and have been together ever since!

On the morning of my 23rd birthday, I woke up and Matt gave me my presents, then he told me there was one more thing and to see it I had to check my computer. There I found an instant message from him with a link to this. I was very excited and thought this was the best birthday present ever, because as many of you know I love snow and I love skiing! The idea of us getting engaged on this trip never even crossed my mind because Matt always said it wouldn’t be around any holidays, birthdays, etc.
Skip ahead 1 week to Seven Springs- we leave work early and the whole way there Matt is acting even nicer than his usual charming self ;) and doing his best to avoid the most minor of disagreements. At Seven Springs our condo was beautiful but the weather was great, so I insisted we ski all night! Finally as we made it back to our condo Matt suggested that we have a glass of wine. I really wanted to shower but he insisted we have a drink first. Then he went to change out of sweatpants and into gym shorts (which I thought was strange being that it was February and we had been outside for hours, but this is Matt so I didn’t think much of it- later I learned it was because he needed a pocket to put the ring in!). Then we took a seat on the couch and he started saying some very sweet things, then he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him! Of course I said yes and gave him a huge hug! The rest of the weekend the weather was awful and we didn’t get to do much more skiing, but neither of us cared- we just spent the time celebrating, drinking and of course EATING!
As if this weekend wouldn’t have already gone down in my book as the best weekend ever, Matt also arranged for the Pittsburgh Steelers to win Super Bowl XL! He thinks of everything!!
...in his words.
There haven't been many times in my life where I've been nervous. But i was extremely nervous about asking Lesley to marry me. We had talked about getting married for a little while, so I was desperately trying to find a way to keep the proposal a surprise. I felt like her birthday gave me my best chance. I went ahead and booked a condo at Seven Springs and told her that was her big birthday present. On the way to Seven Springs I was really starting to get nervous. I wanted to ask Lesley to marry me on our first night at Seven Springs, so we could celebrate the whole weekend (and so I wouldn't be nervous as all hell while trying to ski). When we first got there, we had to check in and find our condo. The weather was ok, and I knew Lesley would want to ski right away. The whole time we were skiing, I had a million thoughts going through my head. "Where in the condo will I do it?" "Will Lesley want to shower as soon as we get back?" None of that was helping keep me calm. We finally get back to the condo, and I convince Lesley to let me pour us a glass of wine before she showers! It's at this point that all of my composure and wits started to erode. I asked Lesley to sit on the couch so i could give a toast and talk to her. That's when I finally got the nerve to get down on one knee and ask her to marry me! Fortunately, she said yes (otherwise I wouldn't be writing this)! |
